New AMVOX 5 by Jaeger-LeCoultre

The fifth watch borne out of the partnership between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin. The AMVOX5 World Chronograph, the first timepiece in the AMVOX collection associating the chronograph with worldtime functions, celebrates the fifth watch borne out of the shared values of two exceptional brands: absolute respect for the noblest traditions; and the tireless pursuit of perfection.

The Grande Maison in the Vallée de Joux and the famous British sports car maker are fuelled by the same passion: a love of mechanical beauty be it of the automobile or horological type. Jaeger-LeCoultre is the only manufacturer to unite over 40 professions and skills under a single roof, from watchmakers and artisans who perpetuate and enrich the heritage passed on by former generations, to microtechnical engineers and cutting-edge technology specialists. “Striving for success is one of the cornerstones of our partnership. The fabulous accomplishments that have punctuated the history of our brands have led to decisive breakthroughs, both in watchmaking and in car manufacturing”, said Jaeger-LeCoultre CEO Jérôme Lambert.

Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr. Ulrich Bez said: “Aston Martin and Jaeger-LeCoultre enjoy a highly productive collaboration, one which shares the values of each brand perfectly. The similar approach to manufacture, attention to detail and craftsmanship lends itself perfectly to this latest time piece in the AMVOX range.

DT in GT2 Vantage

DT in GT2 Vantage

The first Le Mans Series race of 2010 didn’t turn out the way the JMW Motorsport team had hoped, with the eight-hour race only lasting for just over two hours for the Aston Martin Vantage GT2.

The preparations for yesterday’s race had all gone well for Darren Turner and his team-mate Rob Bell. After some good work in the practice sessions, Bell qualified the car up in fifth place on the GT2 grid. It was Bell who was tasked with taking the start and he was going well before he had to pit with a fuel pressure problem. It took around 20 minutes to fix it and then Darren jumped in to head out for his first stint.

“The race was my first run on new rubber and I joined the track right between the two Porsches that were in first and second place,” said Darren. “I was able to maintain that position throughout my run which illustrates the pace we have.”

Bell then jumped back in but halfway through his run the fuel pressure problem returned and the car had to be retired from the race. It’s always unfortunate to not finish but the Aston Martin is a rapidly-improving car and it is only a matter of time before this is reflected in the results.

“Our pace was good throughout the weekend,” said Darren. “The Dunlop tyres worked well through the whole stint and we were improving all the time. Any DNF shows that there is work to be done but I think between JMW Motorsport and Aston Martin Racing they will do the hard work now to prepare for Spa. We’re ticking things off the list now: top five in qualifying and good race pace. All measures of positive progress.”

Darren is heading straight off to Abu Dhabi now for the first round of the brand new FIA GT1 World Championship at the Yas Marina Circuit. He will be on track in the Young Driver AMR DBR9 on Friday lunchtime for the first free practice session. Qualifying takes place on Friday night ahead of the two one-hour races on Saturday.

Introducing the 670bhp Ferrari 599 GTO

Ferrari 599 GTO

Ferrari 599 GTO

Whilst everyone is eagerly awaiting the new Ferrari 458 Italia, the chaps from Maranello have proven that the real big Daddy launch of 2010 is actually the Ferrari 599 GTO – an ‘extreme’ V12 berlinetta: a limited-edition special which promises to be the company’s fastest-ever road car.

Based on the 599XX experimental track car, the road-going 599 GTO – of which just 599 will be made – has itself set a Fiorano lap-time of just 1min 24sec. With 670HP in a 1495kg car, the 0-62mph time comes in at just 3.35sec, and the top speed is claimed to be around 210 mph.

Ferrari is confident that the new car’s handling will be exceptional, promising “the almost complete absence of understeer and a truly communicative chassis”.

The 599 GTO is fitted with the latest, carbon-ceramic brakes, new aerodynamic innovations such as the wheel doughnuts which increase aerodynamic efficiency as well as improve brake cooling, and ‘Supersport’ tyres developed by Michelin, with wider rubber at the front for better roadholding. Meanwhile, the Virtual Race Engineer (VRE) driver interface offers ‘instantaneous’ information on performance.

Is it worthy of the GTO name? If the pictures alone are anything to go by, I would suggest it is.
